With its’ high rainfall and great agricultural soils, West Gippsland is a great place for producing a wide range of fruits and vegetables. There is also strong demand for locally and organically grown fresh food. An event to be held next Sunday, October 19th will encourage and inform those considering an enterprise in market gardening and orcharding.

Baw Baw Organics will be presenting, “So you think you can farm?”, where experienced Gippsland growers will talk about what it takes to be successful. Future farmers and those looking to diversify will be introduced to the critical skills, equipment and information that can make a viable enterprise of fresh food growing. There will be discussion of the ways in which the development of local, direct marketing initiatives, including farmer’s markets, vege box schemes and food hubs is creating new opportunities for success and financial viability in small to medium scale ecological farming.

Presentations from each of the farmers will be followed by a panel discussion, and a chance to meet other growers over afternoon tea.

Baw Baw Organics are growers of organic produce, selling at local and Melbourne Farmer’s Markets and running a local vegetable box scheme. They are keen to encourage more local growers, to supply the growing demand for local produce, for the coming season.

“So you think you can farm?” is one of a hundred events running nationally during “Fair Food Week”.
