Prosperous Descent: Crisis as Opportunity in an Age of Limits

‘Prosperous Descent: Crisis as Opportunity in an Age of Limits’

We are pleased to announce that Dr Samuel Alexander will be speaking to the Baw Baw Sustainability Network on Thursday 29 October at 7.30pm at REstore.

Regular readers of The Conversation will be familiar with Dr Samuel Alexander’s writings, most significantly ‘If everyone lived in an ‘ecovillage’, the Earth would still be in trouble’ (June 26, 2015) and ‘The ‘green-tech’ future is a flawed vision of sustainability’ (August 28, 2015).

Sam Alexander directly challenges the widely held view that economic growth is the most direct path to progress. In this talk he will review various counter-arguments to this view, which suggest that the growth model, in fact, is unsustainable and even socially counter-productive. In an age of ecological overshoot and climate change, we actually need to be thinking about planned "degrowth". Samuel Alexander explores the possibility of turning the overlapping crises of our times into opportunities for cultural and economic renewal."

Biography Dr Alexander is also co-director of the Simplicity Institute and lecturer at the Office for Environmental Programs, University of Melbourne, Australia, teaching a course called ‘Consumerism and the Growth Economy: Interdisciplinary Perspectives’ into the Masters of Environment. He is also a Research Fellow with the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute. He is author of Prosperous Descent: Crisis as Opportunity in an Age of Limits (2015) and Entropia: Life Beyond Industrial Civilisation (2013), and editor of Voluntary Simplicity: The Poetic Alternative to Consumer Culture (2009) and co-editor of Simple Living in History: Pioneers of the Deep Future (2014).

As well as his academic work, in recent years Sam has been working on a ‘simpler way’ demonstration project called Wurruk’an near Moe, Victoria. He is also founder of the Simplicity Collective, a website and social network dedicated to exploring the relationships between voluntary simplicity, energy descent, and post-growth / degrowth economics. Dr. Alexander’s PhD thesis, conducted through Melbourne Law School, is entitled “Property beyond Growth: Toward a Politics of Voluntary Simplicity”.

Cost $9 members or $12 pp. RSVP if possible to E. bobs@dcsi.net.au

Sustainable House Day Sustainable House Day

BAW BAW OPENS HOMES FOR SUSTAINABLE HOUSE DAY 2015 Local community group, Baw Baw Sustainability Network is conducting tours through local green homes for Sustainable House Day 2015 this Sunday 13th September. The aim of the annual national event is to educate and inspire others who would like their home to be more environmentally friendly. Doors open at 10:00 am until 4pm and donations are welcome. The event uses peer to peer education to promote the benefits of integrating renewable energy, recycling, and other sustainable practices into the home and everyday lifestyle. Some of Australia’s most environmentally progressive homes will open up to the general public to provide practical information on how everyone can make their homes more energy efficient, whether they are building, renovating or renting. Learning about these options has the added benefit of saving the householder money over the long term and creates a comfortable pleasant living environment in our homes where we spend the majority of our time. Baw Baw Sustainability Network has arranged for two environmentally sustainable homes to open their doors to the general public to provide practical advice on what has worked well and not so well and to outline the benefits they have received. This years open homes feature a strawbale, off the grid, 8.2 energy rated, owner built home - Earthshack 1511 Lardners Track, Lardner and a more conventional house using energy saving features located at 1915 Lardners Track, Torwood. All the homes participating in Sustainable House Day 2015 will be a valuable resource for anyone looking for inspiration, ideas and the key to sustainable living. For further information see www.bbsn.org.au or www.sustainablehouseday.com

Erwin Jackson from The Climate Institute presents.... From the global to the local – how we modernise and clean up our economy Last year, global investments in CLEAN energy power generation outstripped investments in fossil fuels. For the first time we also saw global emissions fall while the economy grew. In Australia the trends are the opposite and Erwin will discuss how global events will affect Australia and what we all can be doing to modernise and clean up our economy. This follows the AGM which begins at 7.30pm & has no charge. Cost for to stay for the presentation is $10 for members, $15 non-members. Light supper included.
