Introduction to Soil Health Introduction to Soil Health

What does your soil need to be healthy?

The Latrobe Catchment Landcare Network is excited to bring Declan McDonald to Gippsland to talk about soil health.

This workshop will be an introduction to soil health, but more importantly, it will help farmers regain control over the fertility of their soils. Topics covered include understanding soil test results, what soils need to be 'healthy', and what good soil looks like.

Core concepts will be discussed in the morning before heading into the field after lunch for a hands-on investigation of soils.

Morning Tea and lunch will be provided.

This is a FREE event.

Bio Declan McDonald is SESL Australia's Senior Soil Scientist. Declan is a Certified Professional Soil Scientist (CPSS) and holds a BSc in Urban Horticulture and a Master of Sustainable Agriculture (Soils). He has held key roles in local government, as well as key technical roles as Principal Land Management Officer with the Tasmanian government and as Statewide Specialist - Productive Soils with the Victorian State Government.

In 2014 Declan opened the Victorian office of SESL Australia. In this role he develops soil fertility management plans for farmers, and undertakes soil investigations on problem sites.

Latrobe Catchment Landcare Network (LCLN) covers a large and agriculturally rich area of central and West Gippsland. The area includes significant remnants of the critically endangered Gippsland Red Gum Grassy Woodland, with many paddock tree remnants still remaining.

The Network supports 21 Landcare groups between the Latrobe and West Gippsland region who involve themselves in best practise land management activities. Our 21 Landcare groups are extremely diverse and include many rural focussed groups with a wide range of active environmental projects. We also have two urban groups and a number of local primary schools involved in Junior Landcare.

The Networks core responsibility is to provide support to the groups to enable and assist them to achieve their objectives.
