Last call for for the upcoming Autumn PermaBlitz in West Creek THIS SUNDAY. Here's where to go, http://www.sustainabilitygippsland.com/event/permablitz-southern-gippsland-autumn-2015-west-creek . Hope to see you there! Skye

Hi all.

Here is a great article for you to check out, showing how backyard food gardens and permaculture is making a difference. Love that one of the couples interviewed were thinking they needed to go "off-grid" to the country but are doing it all in their own suburban backyards. This is really the most reliable scenario as not everyone can or should go bush. http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/the-quiet-revolution-sustainable-food-movement-flourishes-in-suburban-backyards-20150417-1mdsmj.html?stb=twt

Also, don'f forget the Autumn 2015 Permablitz this weekend, sign up now to share in the fun!! http://www.sustainabilitygippsland.com/event/permablitz-southern-gippsland-autumn-2015-west-creek

Hi all, Am looking for people to host Permablitzes and others to help out with design and facilitation. If you think that you may be interested please complete a Permablitz Expression of Interest form (located under Information tab above) and send in to me. People with the most Blitzes previously attended will be given priority. Remember the events cannot move a mountain in a day, but it is a great way to get ideas for your garden design and some help to get you going. For those who may have skills in design and facilitation (basically coordinating and directing activities with designer) please give me a call on 5662 9380 or send an email to permablitzsg@gmail.com Kind Regards, Skye

Future Yinnar Community Garden Visit - Expression of Interest Invited

I have a wonderful offer from Rosemary at the Yinnar Community Garden for Permablitz Southern Gippsland members to visit the garden, help out at one of their working bees (2nd or 4th Saturday of the month) and while there visit their Seed Library (before 12:30 pm) and tour Arc (before 3 pm)

arc is an artist-run, non-profit organisation whose members are proud of the continued development of the art centre which today houses its administration base, gallery arc, retail outlet, theatrette, private studios and public access areas for printmaking, ceramics, metalwork, photography, painting and drawing.

Rosemary has been a great supporter of Permablitz Southern Gippsland, attended a number of past Blitzes and has lots of experience, being involved with the celebrated Yinnar Community Garden for many years.

As it is a bit further for some of you to travel, we are asking that if you are interested in being part of a group visit, please register your interest by Replying to the Group Discussion post at http://www.sustainabilitygippsland.com/group/permablitz-southern-gippsland, and leave details of which dates (2nd or 4th Saturday of each month only) are the best for you and if you are interested in going by bus (we may have to charge a small fee for bus).

Hello Friends,

As the daffodils are starting to show us their sunny faces, spring is in the air! I am certainly looking forward to my fruit trees bud and bloom in the coming months. I have started planting lots more flowers to attract beneficial bugs to the garden, finally adding calendular flowers which are stunning!

I just wanted to remind you that the first Community Garden Permablitz is being held on Saturday 6th September at the PICAL Community Garden in Cowes. Adrian James is an experienced designer and will guide participants through establishing a 'food forest' teaching us about applying the principles of guild and companion planting, correct plant spacing to enhance productivity and reduce competition, building productivity over time, form and function of a diverse range of useful plants.

Community Gardens are really fabulous places to learn sustainable gardening practices and certainly with Adrian's support, Cowes is no exception, developed using Permaculture principles.

It would be appreciated if you could promote it through your networks as with all community events, the more the merrier. RSVPs are necessary to make sure that the day runs smoothly and food plentiful. To RSVP to this event, please go to http://www.sustainabilitygippsland.com/event/cowes-community-garden

Also, if you live in the Leongatha area, a new Community Garden is under development. If you are interested in knowing more or want to find out how to get involved, feel free to call Joanne Knox, CCG on (03) 5662-6700.

Hi all,

Past Permablitz Host, Elizabeth, needs our help to source organic mulch. Here is her message from the group chat page. Head there to let her know if you can help!

"Hello Permablitzers! Can't wait to show off my permablitzed garden in a few months (maybe more) time once I get my pizza oven made. Everything is coming up roses, rocket and broccoli! Now, I have a problem you may be able to help with. I need to source certified organic manure to feed our slightly bedraggled garden beds at Koonwarra Village School where I work as the Kitchen/Garden Mentor. A lot of local organic dairy farms use effluent ponds so that makes it tricky. Any ideas or leads? We'd need 5-10 cubic metres of the stuff annually. Regards, Elizabeth"

Also, don't forget that the next Permablitz is coming up! Adrian James, Permaculture designer and keen Permablitzer will host a Permablitz at the Cowes Community Garden. Head to the Group Events to RSVP - http://www.sustainabilitygippsland.com/event/cowes-community-garden

Hi Everyone. Just came across this fabulous clip from Kitchen Gardens founder Roger Doiron - http://youtu.be/Ezuz_-eZTMI. I am interested to hear what you think about what we need to do here in Southern Gippsland to get more kitchen gardens, known here as vege patches, in the ground, so please head over to the Conversation tab on the group page and share your wisdom! While you are there, you might like to start a conversation yourself!

I though that some of you may be interested in the huge undertaking by Gippsland Water in the composting of green waste, industrial food waste, grease trap, bio-solids and much more. Here is a short video from Compost Victoria https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eSYPNadK9Q Thanks to Tony Gardner for sending this through. Tony is working with the West Gippsland CMA currently supporting some demonstration sites that are testing the efficacy and cost value of compost on broad scale agricultural systems. We will bring you more information when we get it or you can contact Tony directly tonyg@wgcma.vic.gov.au

EVENT DEFERRED! Just want to explain that the Permablitz at Rosemary's has been deferred until Sunday the 23rd March as we have not had enough RSVP's for the day (we aim for at least 15). A lot of preparation goes into these events by the hosts and volunteer designers and facilitators so it is important to have enough hands on the day to get the plans implemented, not physically overwhelm ourselves and maintain the fun! We do apologise for any inconvenience to those who RSVP'd and hope that you will still be able to make the new date. It will be an exciting day learning about a different kind of garden feature, the hugekultur, which not only will help provide some wind protection but also uses some of that harder green waste that can be tricky to utilise without a mulcher. We hope that the new date will enable more of you to come and help Rosemary. For those who have already RSVP'd we ask that you please review your attendance status to help with our planning for the 23rd.

Hi all, the next permablitz date has been set! Permablitz Southern Gippsland Numbe 5 will be held on the 22nd September in Corinella. Our hosts this time are Antoinette and Ron. They are keen to explore the possibilities of aquaculture on their township block. Due to the nature of the work with water and property size, Antoinette has asked that the blitz is restrict to a maximum of 12 people and unfortunately children will not be invited this time. RSVP is due by 9 September. Directions to the site will be sent the week prior to the event to those who have RSVP'd. More info please call Skye on 0407 460 991.

Jim and Jackies Treechange Permablitz Jim and Jackies Treechange Permablitz

Poowong’s first Permablitz! Jackie and Jim invite you to be part of their tree change story.

"Our straw bale house is almost finished. Now it’s time for our sustainable garden. It’s a blank canvas with 2 acres of pasture to turn into productive garden.

We’ll be starting with trees – Hazelnuts, carob, olives, chestnuts, citrus. Help and learn about native planting to attract birds and good bugs; and - nut trees - great staple and good windbreak. Come for the Hazelnut grove workshop held by Karen Sutherland of Edible Eden Designs.

Then native creek bed planting – carex, tea tree, lomandra and other water plants to encourage insects and birds as well as help our giant earthworm colonies. Karen will also do a water plants workshop here too.

If we get time we’ll add to the start of our fruit den with some apple trees and under story berry boxes. Future projects include a hen haven and a vegie stair case.

Can’t wait to share this learning experience with you. Such a great opportunity to learn about permaculture and garden design. Tours of our straw bale pole house available too."

Please register at their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pg/jimandjackiestreechange/events/

Attendees will be sent the address and directions prior to the event. Please make sure that you wear adequate protective clothing,do some light stretching before starting work and work within your abilities to prevent injuries. Please bring a mug, water bottle and bring with you simple hand gardening tools to help out on the day.

Fish Creek Community Garden Permablitz Fish Creek Community Garden Permablitz

The Fish Creek Community Garden was established 6 years ago on the platform of the former Fish Creek Railway Station in the centre of the town. It has grown steadily in both garden production and member numbers since its inception. Like all community gardens, it provides an opportunity for members to participate in the growing, harvesting and sharing of crops and the learning of new skills in an inclusive social setting. Regular workshops are held on topics such as compost making, wicking bed construction, preserving the harvest etc. Juneen Schulz, Permaculturist, is the facilitator at the Garden and will lead the Permablitz. Activities planned for the day include: - constructing two wicking beds in recycled apple crates - constructing a compost heap along biodynamic lines - creating artwork along a fence - preparing a bed along a fence and planting a grapevine - fixing outdoor furniture donated by the Shire into permanent positions - shifting a compost bay to a new position in the “works area” - converting two old baths, one into a water feature growing edible plants, the other into a worm farm At the Permablitz we hope to provide an opportunity and setting for learning new skills, meeting like-minded people and sharing expertise and creativity. We will welcome people of all skill levels to help us transform our space.

For further information on how a Permablitz runs, please refer to the Group Page's support documentation. Hope to see you there!!

Permablitz Southern Gippsland - Autumn 2015 - West Creek Permablitz Southern Gippsland - Autumn 2015 - West Creek

Help host, Sue Mitchell, build her permaculture vision from the ground up, starting with the Zone 5 biodiversity and wood forage area. There will be lots of take away info and experience for small landholders, and especially for those who are planning a rural green field site of their own.

Sue is an well known local architect specialising in sustainable and energy efficient design, has previously helped prepare new permaculture designers during Southern Cross Permaculture Institute Certificate Courses and will surely be a very knowledgeable and experienced host to this event's participants.

Here, Sue, shares her vision for her new block. "When I have taken friends to see “the new block” I have seen the look on their faces... which more or less said “why have you bought this bare windswept paddock?” The answer is that I don’t see a bare windswept paddock. I see 2.5 acres surrounded by native trees which create a sheltered micro-climate in the middle for humans, animals and the edible garden. I see paddocks divided by trees which provide shelter and shade. I see a house with a sunny outdoor living space on the north side with a pergola covered in grape vines, and raised garden beds full of herbs and vegies off the kitchen. Around the perimeter of the lawn on the eastern, to the north of the house are more raised garden beds full of vegies, hedges of feijoas, and fruit and nut trees on the west/northwest side for shade. There will be a fenced orchard to the west beyond the lawn, where chooks will free range and have a run for night time."

Permablitz @ Rosemary's Permablitz @ Rosemary's

Rosemary’s place in on a hill with magnificent views but it’s forever windy so the challenge is to create a protected food garden with hugelkulture which is a form of building an earth mound using logs, branches, twigs, hay and soil - check out this link for more info http://permaculturenews.org/2010/08/03/the-art-and-science-of-making-a-hugelkultur-bed-transforming-woody-debris-into-a-garden-resource/. Within the shelter of the mound a garden will be developed re-cycling some of the garden beds that Rosemary already has. The hugelkulture will be planted out with small edible perennial plants on the lee side and some nitrogen fixing plants on the windy side. There is also an area where a terraced garden needs to be implemented again planted out with perennial edible’s.

Exact Location will be sent to RSVP list the week prior to the event.

If you have any resources (paper, mulch, plants, seeds) that you might be able to bring to the Blitz, please post a message on the event page.

Permablitz 6 - Elizabeth Permablitz 6 - Elizabeth

This is a town property and the focus will be on the espaliered fruit planted on a side access laneway, and the backyard where a new structure will be installed to contain chooks to their own area, allowing the separation of a bird-free veggie growing zone and recreational areas such as a future pizza oven, lawn for child’s play and a greenhouse attached to the building.

Elizabeth has lived at the property for over 12 months and has been able to observe the seasonal changes, soil type and behaviour of chooks and resident guinea pigs, all contributing to the plan now in place.

It’s a very exciting time for a gardener who is for the first time in a position to do something on her own property, as opposed to the container gardening is done when renting. Truly putting down roots!

Permablitzes are fantastic fun, you get to make new friends, learn about Permaculture, get some excercise and help create edible food gardens based on Permaculture principles across Southern Gippsland one back yard at a time.

Permablitzes are free events where people get the opportunity to learn about permaculture design, share food, make new friends and get some exercise. Each Permablitz involves a pre blitz design visit by a volunteer permaculture designer (someone with a Permaculture Design Certificate), organisation of the materials needed (by the host) and then the blitz day.

Permablitz works on reciprocity, so in order to have a blitz in your own backyard you have to help out first on three others.

‘Permablitz’ began in Melbourne’s outer eastern suburbs in 2006 with a Permablitz day involving a gathering of people (anyone and everyone no matter what skill level or physical ability) to blitz a backyard by creating edible gardens using the principles of permaculture and sustainable living.

Permablitz Southern Gippsland was formed in May of 2012 with support from South Gippsland Shire in response to community input to the South Gippsland Shire Sustainability Strategy.
