Slow Food East Gippsland Gatherings with Teresa Oates Slow Food East Gippsland Gatherings with Teresa Oates

Teresa Oates and Nathan Smith of Duart Homestead will entertain us with a cooking demonstration followed by dinner selected from Mangia! Mangia! Gatherings

Teresa Oates and Angela Villella are passionate in their quest to preserve the customs and vibrant food culture of their parents' native Calabria, and to introduce new generations to the joys of simple, generous cooking with the freshest produce. In their first, bestselling book, Mangia! Mangia!, they celebrated home-style southern Italian food and their families' life-affirming seasonal food rituals. Mangia! Mangia! Gatherings is all about accogliarsi, the spirit of coming together that permeates the lives of those in this close-knit community, and the traditional recipes that embody this spirit. Join Teresa and Angela as they clear out their garages to celebrate family christenings and first communions, and delight in the time-honoured rituals and frenzied food preparation these entail. Find out why nonnas start their Christmas baking in November, and learn about the respectful spirit of generosity that offers comfort to a grieving family with a pot of homemade brodo (soup). Featuring 110 authentic Italian recipes, including plenty of everyday meals, as well as elaborate feasts to feed a crowd and sweet treats for special occasions.

Slow Food envisions a world in which all people can access and enjoy food that is good for them, good for those who grow it and good for the planet.

Food is tied to many other aspects of life, including culture, politics, agriculture and the environment. Through our food choices we can collectively influence how food is cultivated, produced and distributed, and as a result bring about great change.

We believe that Informed and selective consumers become co-producers by demanding food that is good, clean and fair.

Our approach is based on a concept of food quality that is defined by three interconnected principles: good, clean and fair.

GOOD: a fresh and flavorsome seasonal diet that satisfies the senses and is part of the local culture. CLEAN: food production and consumption that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or human health. FAIR: accessible prices for consumers and fair conditions and pay for producers.
