Street lighting across South Gippsland is now brighter, less expensive and better for the environment thanks to an upgrade to energy efficient light globes via a Federal Community Energy Efficiency Grant.

Almost 1300 existing 80-watt mercury vapour lights have been replaced with T5 fluorescent bulbs, which are 60 per cent more energy efficient.

South Gippsland worked in partnership with Bass Coast to ‘bulk buy’ the lights as well as the installation work. The savings achieved from this approach resulted in an additional 80 energy saving lights being installed in some heritage areas across South Gippsland and approximately 40 old style lights being upgraded across Council’s parks and car parks.

Since March this year, the electricity bills associated with the street lights have seen a decrease of approximately 100,000 kWh compared with the same period last year. At today’s electricity rates that’s a saving of over $15,000 in just 3 months!

The 2014 Southern Gippsland Sustainability Festival held on Sunday 13th April was yet again a roaring success! The festival attracted 2000 people who enjoyed strolling around in the amazing autumn weather. With the event drawing people from Baw Baw and the Latrobe Valley as well as South Gippsland and Bass Coast, there is no sign of this annual event getting smaller. The extensive variety of stalls included displays and information about worm farms, keeping chickens, solar electricity and heating, making honey, growing vegetables……... the list goes on. There were plenty of free activities to keep the kids busy including a race against waste game, building mini-sustainable houses, face painting and more while the parents could enjoy the displays and presentations. Presentations included a cheese and yoghurt making demo, how to grow garlic at home, sustainable business design, community gardens and veggie growing, how to heat your house using the air in your ceiling cavity and major sponsors – gREat spoke about getting rid of your electricity bills forever! The success of the festival illustrates that the movement towards a more sustainable future in Southern Gippsland has vast community support behind it.

Earth Hour Staff Presentation Earth Hour Staff Presentation

Join the Sustainability team on Tuesday 28th March at 12:30 in the Council Chambers for lunch and a movie in celebration of Earth hour 2017.

WHAT’S EARTH HOUR? Earth Hour – a movement that started in Australia – is a simple idea that has quickly turned into a global phenomenon. Hundreds of millions of people around the world turn off their lights for one hour, on the same night, to show their commitment to creating a more sustainable planet.

WHAT MOVIE? Places We Love Australia is home to some of the world's most stunning natural landscapes. We pride ourselves on our breathtaking beaches, reefs, national parks, rainforests and rural areas which uniquely distinguish Australia as the “lucky country”. Yet these iconic places are under threat from rising temperatures and more extreme weather as a result of climate change.

Places We Love: An Earth Hour Documentary Special travels to some of Australia’s iconic natural wonders, to highlight the impact that climate change is having on the places we love across Australia. Along the way, they speak to some of Australia’s best known personalities, scientists and everyday Aussies to hear more about the changes they are seeing to Australia’s great outdoors.

With some laughter, a few tears, and some crazy fishing antics to boot, we’ll discover what these changes mean for Australia’s unique landscape, our wildlife and for each and every one of us.

The installation of solar battery storage technology is set to revolutionise the way households and businesses use their electricity. A solar powered system coupled with battery storage can provide electricity to your home or business 24 hours a day, but it won’t suit everyone’s situation.

Find out from the experts about solar battery storage systems and learn the pros and cons. Is it affordable? What is the latest technology? Will it work for me?

Earth Hour – a movement that started in Australia – is a simple idea that has quickly turned into a global phenomenon. Hundreds of millions of people turn off their lights for one hour, on the same night, across the globe to show their commitment to creating a more sustainable planet. Earth Hour 2016 is from 8:30pm – 9:30pm on Saturday 19th March. To celebrate this annual event the Sustainability Team are hosting a lunch and movie for staff

The Polar Bear Man will be screened during lunch. This documentary is about one man’s struggle to find closure from his trauma as he returns to the scene where he was attacked by a polar bear. Polar bear attacks on humans are not a new phenomenon, but they’ve remained relatively rare until the past decade. As explored over the course of this riveting film, one of the major culprits behind this upward shift comes from what some may consider a surprising source: climate change.
