Sustainable House Day - 2 homes open in Wellington Shire Sustainable House Day - 2 homes open in Wellington Shire

Two houses will be open in Wellington Shire for Sustainable House Day. Please check the Sustainable House Day website for further details at www.sustainablehouseday.com

BLOOMING ROSEDALE - open 10am to 3pm Blooming Rosedale is a renovated 1970s hardiplank house which is in continual improvement. New features include new flooring, guttering facias, eaves and fences. We coloured the roof “surf mist” to help keep the house cool in summer. While a 16 panel solar pv system provides electricity. In the garden we have a worm farm and compost bins made from used pallets which also collects the neighbours garden leaves. We are planting as much native garden as possible as well as herbs, vegetables and fruit trees. Gold Coin Donation for the new Rosedale Bush Trail from Rosedale shops to RV Park.

TREMBATH HOUSE - Open 10am - 4pm Our home is situated in the Strzelecki Ranges on the Jack River. We run our home on a micro-hydro system and have for 23 years. We also have a small amount of supplemental energy from solar panels. Our home is built using mostly reused materials, from the breaching pieces in the plumbing to the door handles including the light switches. The heating is via a hydronic floor system. Our home has an east/west axis, thereby enabling it to be passively oriented.

Our summer domestic hot water is from an evacuated tube system and winter hot water is from our slow combustion stove which also heats the hydronic floor.

We have an evolving fire sprinkler system and a 5m square cellar built one meter underground as a bunker. The property, 34 hectares, is under covenant with Trust for Nature, in temperate rain forest.

We do need to be aware of our energy usage, but other than air conditioning, we are able to use any “modern” convenience.

Getting to this home using your GPS may be a challenge, but Leon is happy for you to ring him to guide you in from Yarram there is also a guiding map to download. Once you get there, the stove will be alight and the kettle on top.
