Thank you to those who attended last week. It was again a lively discussion. For those interested in how climate change may impact storms, I posted the following on the SGSN Sustainability Gippsland Chat which may interest you. The Community Talks Climate session last week raised questions about how climate change is changing the nature and magnitude of storms. The word from the Climate Council is that "more intense rainfall and higher sea levels have combined to make these kinds of storms [east coast lows] more damaging". To read more ... https://www.climatecouncil.org.au/how-is-climate-change-impacting-storms . Feel free to use the chat function to raise any pertinent info that you may come across or comment you would like to make. We will be showing the actual Episode 8 (sorry again about that!) later in the month, so stay tuned. Regards, Skye

A big thank you to those who attended our latest screening of the Years of Living Dangerously last week. It is often challenging to face some of the issues raised in the film, but change begins with a first step and a commitment to keep going. Having said that, here is a good article from The Conversation on the outcomes of the UN climate talks in Paris - https://theconversation.com/five-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-paris-climate-deal-52256 . So how do we help our government keep these promises, well as their constituents it is important to let them know that climate change action it is important to us and that we are also taking action at home.

On the night I said that I had some links to follow on from what happened wih Superstorm Sandy. What happened when super Storm Sandy hit the US was very much a human tragedy, but also created a much larger question about how we manage these events. Do we retreat or do we engineer solutions such as protective barriers? Here is a great comment piece from the collaborative The Conversation https://theconversation.com/sea-level-rise-is-real-which-is-why-we-need-to-retreat-from-unrealistic-advice-51051?utmmedium=email&utmcampaign=Latest+from+The+Conversation+for+December+4+2015+-+3929&utmcontent=Latest+from+The+Conversation+for+December+4+2015+-+3929+CIDde389334517bd02b5937c785d14bb8ed&utmsource=campaignmonitor&utm_term=how%20we%20can%20change This is the direct link to a short TV piece giving an insight to the on the ground individual experience of those homeowners on the storm's front line. https://youtu.be/1pW5MZFU0E8

And finally, I have just been notified of a community member who is hoping to show a film called "This Changes Everything" on January 24. Here is what she has written and the link to the event tickets. It will only go ahead if she gets a certain number of tickets which is about 25, so it would be great to support her in this endeavour.

"Hello everyone, As you will possibly be aware I am concerned about the impact that climate change will have on the planet and the future of our children and grandchildren. I have read Naomi Klein's brilliant (but large) book This Changes Everything which provides the knowledge needed to be informed about the impact as well as some things we can all do to make things better. In order to share this information I am hosting a one-time screening of the documentary film, THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING based on the book, at the:

Leongatha Stadium 4 Cinema on Sunday 24th January 2015 at 7.10pm

To reserve your tickets please visit the Tugg Events Page - www.tugg.com/events/81870 My Tugg event requires a set number of tickets to be sold in order for the screening to go ahead so your credit card will not be charged until that number is reached. If you are not interested, or cannot make it yourself, I would greatly appreciate it if you could spread the word. The more people who care about this the more chance there will be to make the changes necessary. Any monies left over will go to The Australian Conservation Foundation.

Thank you so much for your help with this, Nola"

Hi all, Thanks to those who attended the night, it was again a good session. It is always great to see how in the face of challenging information we can work together to find ways towards a better future. After the meeting Lyndal and I got our heads together to put together a list of further information the session requested. I will add this to the Years of Living Info Sheet and update it on the Network's Group page. The next session is the 7th October 2015 and will be Episode Four: Ice & Brimstone. See you next time! Want to effect change? Apart from encouraging all those that you interact with on a regular basis to make positive changes in their daily lives, the government representatives are there to hear your views, debate and agree on policy & law changes on your behalf. In South Gippsland, you can contact your local Councillor, State Member or Federal Member of Parliament. Here are some links that may assist you in contacting your local representative and let them know what is important to you and your future: Councillors @ South Gippsland - http://www.southgippsland.vic.gov.au/Page/Page.asp?PageId=105 State Government Members of Parliament - http://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/electorates/ Federal Government Members of Parliament - http://www.aph.gov.au/SenatorsandMembers/ParliamentarianSearch_Results

And don't forget that meeting with others who share your views enables change too through supporting each other in positive action. Check out other groups and events on Sustainability Gippsland to find more fellow Gippslanders to cooperate for a truly sustainable future.

Hi all.

Here is a great article for you to check out, showing how backyard food gardens and permaculture is making a difference. Love that one of the couples interviewed were thinking they needed to go "off-grid" to the country but are doing it all in their own suburban backyards. This is really the most reliable scenario as not everyone can or should go bush. http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/the-quiet-revolution-sustainable-food-movement-flourishes-in-suburban-backyards-20150417-1mdsmj.html?stb=twt

arc is an artist-run, non-profit organisation whose members are proud of the continued development of the art centre which today houses its administration base, gallery arc, retail outlet, theatrette, private studios and public access areas for printmaking, ceramics, metalwork, photography, painting and drawing.

Rosemary has been a great supporter of Permablitz Southern Gippsland, attended a number of past Blitzes and has lots of experience, being involved with the celebrated Yinnar Community Garden for many years.

As it is a bit further for some of you to travel, we are asking that if you are interested in being part of a group visit, please register your interest by Replying to the Group Discussion post at http://www.sustainabilitygippsland.com/group/permablitz-southern-gippsland, and leave details of which dates (2nd or 4th Saturday of each month only) are the best for you and if you are interested in going by bus (we may have to charge a small fee for bus).

Hi all, Our next meeting will be held on the Tuesday 23rd September 2014 in the South Gippsland Shire Council Meeting Room 2, Michael Place, Leongatha from 7-9 pm. We are very lucky to have Tony Gardner coming to share exciting new understandings of our local soils and their role in the sustainability of our farms. A light supper will be provided, so please RSVP for catering purposes. Head to the event page to RSVP! http://www.sustainabilitygippsland.com/event/southern-gippsland-sustainability-and-local-food-network-meeting If you are not able to make the meeting but have something to share with the group, please send information to me at skyes@southgippsland.vic.gov.au and I will pass it on. Hello Friends,

As the daffodils are starting to show us their sunny faces, spring is in the air! I am certainly looking forward to my fruit trees bud and bloom in the coming months. I have started planting lots more flowers to attract beneficial bugs to the garden, finally adding calendular flowers which are stunning!

I just wanted to remind you that the first Community Garden Permablitz is being held on Saturday 6th September at the PICAL Community Garden in Cowes. Adrian James is an experienced designer and will guide participants through establishing a 'food forest' teaching us about applying the principles of guild and companion planting, correct plant spacing to enhance productivity and reduce competition, building productivity over time, form and function of a diverse range of useful plants.

Community Gardens are really fabulous places to learn sustainable gardening practices and certainly with Adrian's support, Cowes is no exception, developed using Permaculture principles.

It would be appreciated if you could promote it through your networks as with all community events, the more the merrier. RSVPs are necessary to make sure that the day runs smoothly and food plentiful. To RSVP to this event, please go to http://www.sustainabilitygippsland.com/event/cowes-community-garden

Also, if you live in the Leongatha area, a new Community Garden is under development. If you are interested in knowing more or want to find out how to get involved, feel free to call Joanne Knox, CCG on (03) 5662-6700.

Hi all,

Past Permablitz Host, Elizabeth, needs our help to source organic mulch. Here is her message from the group chat page. Head there to let her know if you can help!

"Hello Permablitzers! Can't wait to show off my permablitzed garden in a few months (maybe more) time once I get my pizza oven made. Everything is coming up roses, rocket and broccoli! Now, I have a problem you may be able to help with. I need to source certified organic manure to feed our slightly bedraggled garden beds at Koonwarra Village School where I work as the Kitchen/Garden Mentor. A lot of local organic dairy farms use effluent ponds so that makes it tricky. Any ideas or leads? We'd need 5-10 cubic metres of the stuff annually. Regards, Elizabeth"

Also, don't forget that the next Permablitz is coming up! Adrian James, Permaculture designer and keen Permablitzer will host a Permablitz at the Cowes Community Garden. Head to the Group Events to RSVP - http://www.sustainabilitygippsland.com/event/cowes-community-garden

I though that some of you may be interested in the huge undertaking by Gippsland Water in the composting of green waste, industrial food waste, grease trap, bio-solids and much more. Here is a short video from Compost Victoria https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eSYPNadK9Q Thanks to Tony Gardner for sending this through. Tony is working with the West Gippsland CMA currently supporting some demonstration sites that are testing the efficacy and cost value of compost on broad scale agricultural systems. We will bring you more information when we get it or you can contact Tony directly tonyg@wgcma.vic.gov.au

Hi everyone! Just letting you know that a slide show is up on the event page for you to have a look at of the day. I have been arguing with technology and been busy with the preparations for this Sunday's Sustainability Festival (to be held at Coal Creek), so apologies for the delay. Also, I have a message from Juneen: Could you thank the person who dropped my shovel off at the community garden please. But now I have a cyclone shovel that doesn’t belong to me if you can put the notice out, I’ll drop it off wherever it’s convenient. Glad I got my shovel back because it was a good one. And finally, once this weekend is over, I will be looking to book the next Blitz date. If any of you think you might be able to facilitate a future blitz, please let me know as we always need such people to keep these going. So hope you all have a safe Easter Holiday and hope to see some of you at the Festival!

Skye Radcliffe-Scott posted an update on the Permablitz @ Rosemary's event.

Hi all, fabulous day yesterday! Thank you to you all for such a great effort and thank you to Rosemary for hosting and Juneen for designing. The number of plants, manure, paper and seeds kindly donated, just added to the success of the day, so thank you. I am hoping to get a media release out this week so if you have any photos of the day please send them on to the group email permablitzsg@gmail.com so that I can make up a slide show of the day. Also, if you have any comments on your experience of the event, please post it here on the site. We are keen to keep this group growing and getting to as many new backyards as possible. And last but not least, Juneen has lost her much loved shovel. It has a newly oiled handle and recently sharpened (but unfortunately not named), so if you have picked it up by mistake, please get in contact with her on 0427 809 509. She will be very happy to have it back. Stay tuned for the next update and don't forget you can chat here online with each other and the wider group in between Blitzes.

Firstly and very importantly, there are a few people that have not disclosed their email on this site and who I still have not received an email from. Please send an email to permablitzsg@gmail.com as soon as possible so that I can send out the address for the day to everyone. Also, a big THANKYOU to everyone who has offered to bring along paper, plants, manure. It is certainly very much appreciated. We might see a little rain on the day (and funnily enough probably some wind!) so be sure to bring gumboots and a rain coat. Juneen and Rosemary have asked that if anyone has a chainsaw (with appropriate skills of course) it would be of great help on the day. Well, keep an eye out for an email with the Blitz address in your inbox later today and see you bright and early on Sunday!

EVENT DEFERRED! Just want to explain that the Permablitz at Rosemary's has been deferred until Sunday the 23rd March as we have not had enough RSVP's for the day (we aim for at least 15). A lot of preparation goes into these events by the hosts and volunteer designers and facilitators so it is important to have enough hands on the day to get the plans implemented, not physically overwhelm ourselves and maintain the fun! We do apologise for any inconvenience to those who RSVP'd and hope that you will still be able to make the new date. It will be an exciting day learning about a different kind of garden feature, the hugekultur, which not only will help provide some wind protection but also uses some of that harder green waste that can be tricky to utilise without a mulcher. We hope that the new date will enable more of you to come and help Rosemary. For those who have already RSVP'd we ask that you please review your attendance status to help with our planning for the 23rd.

Hi there. Thanks to those who have RSVPd for the Fish Creek Permablitz. Rosemary has been working hard to prepare the heavy lifting part of the Hugelkulture mound. At this stage we are still looking for people to join the blitz (we aim to have at least 15 to be able achieve enough in the day). So if you are planning to bring friends/family, please let us know and we would appreciate any more that you can rope in. Stay tuned for another update later this week.

They are keen to explore the possibilities of aquaculture on their township block. Due to the nature of the work with water and property size, Antoinette has asked that the blitz is restrict to a maximum of 12 people and unfortunately children will not be invited this time. RSVP is due by 9 September. Directions to the site will be sent the week prior to the event to those who have RSVP'd. More info please call Skye on 0407 460 991.
